The wave bar was working and in place at daylight on Sat. morning and I had visions of a 500K day. The Foen gap was not there(open) so wave flight had to be delayed. The ridge on Buffalo Mtn. was working, so I volunteered to be sniffer and lead the group on the ridge since we had a lot of 1st time ridge runners. Later, as the Foen gap opened, Randy Teel and myself went in search of our favorite mistress, only to met by a demon, she witch. Something was wrong and the usually benign wave was an angry monster of rotor turbulence. Even at 5000’ msl we were still being battered in the worst turbulence I have ever encountered in my life. We radioed the others not to come up there, but to go to the ridge instead where we all ended up playing the rest of the day. Sunday brought thermals to 5200’ over the valley and as the valley sky od in mid afternoon the ridge began working and we spent the rest of the day whooping and hollering and zooming along the ridge. We stacked vertically to avoid the congestion and were in constant radio contact to report positions and when turning.
David Cheek flew up in his Cessna on Sat. afternoon and Rick Howell drove up in his Viper. He may have had the most fun of anyone. Sat. night’s feast consisted of grilled rack of lamb, pork tenderloin, chicken breast, good wine, cigars and the standard campfire camaraderie, under a nearly full moon, clear skies and balmy temps.
Everyone had a good time and I think all the first timers to the area were suitably impressed. Many thanks to Rick Howell for his help with getting everyone on and off the runway. TheTulsa Skyhawks for, once again providing the tow plane. Randy and Skeet for towing. Next time I hope Rick comes to fly. The weekend activites were filmed by David Glover and will post on U Tube. I will post the link as soon as it is available so EVERYONE can see what it is like up there.
Good lift,
Gerry Kiefer
