TSA Instruction Delays – Board of Directors Institutes Duty Instructor Plan

New members are keenly aware of the delays in being assigned to a TSA Instructor to supervise their training; and most existing members have experienced difficulty in scheduling an appointment with a TSA Instructor. The TSA Board of Directors has addressed this problem by arranging to have a duty instructor available each Saturday.

Starting Saturday July 7, there will be a TSA Instructor rostered to act as Duty Instructor, starting at 10.00 am each Saturday. The Duty Instructor should have at least 4 instructing slots available during the day. In special circumstances, notice will be posted on the TSA webpage in the event of the schedule being for a different day or start time. The first special circumstance will be on Saturday July 21 when the Duty Instructor will not be available until after the termination of the TSA Board of Directors meeting scheduled for that morning.

How do you sign up for a Duty Instructor slot? Slots will be allocated on a first-come first served basis by signing up on the Duty Instructor Sign-Up List on the day in question. Tell the Duty Instructor that you have signed up so that he/she knows you are on the field, and what you want to accomplish. The Duty Instructor Sign-Up List will be held by the duty Line Chief. Members will fly in order of sign-up unless the member at the top of the list elects to cede his/her position to the member next on the list. You will also need to sign-up on the Sign-Up Sheet for TSA Gliders for your 2-place glider of choice. That list will also be held by the duty Line Chief. Sign up early to avoid disappointment!

If you are not present on the field when your turn comes, you risk losing your slot!

Please note that training at TSA is provided by TSA Instructors in three general ways. One, to a TSA Instructor’s individually assigned student. Two, to other members at mutually agreed times when the TSA Instructor concerned is available and not busy with an already assigned student. Three, by the TSA Instructor serving on the Duty Instructor roster. Pending assignment to a TSA supervising Instructor, members (new members included) are free (A) to make a training appointment with a TSA Instructor who is available, (B) to sign up and fly with the Duty Instructor, and (C) to use the TSA discount arrangement to get training up to first solo at Southwest Soaring at Caddo Mills TX, details of which are provided with TSA’s orientation materials. A contact list of current TSA Instructors is set out below.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or call me. Remember that TSA is a self-help operation. While you are awaiting your slot with the Duty Instructor, please help out on the field or around the club and make your contribution to getting things done quicker and better!
